Pretty Tasty Tasting @ WSET L4 Practice - Sangiovese vs Nebbiolo.
It is always fascinating to compare & contrast side by side the wines that are easily confused during a blind tasting. Sangiovese & Nebbiolo used to be 2 grapes that gave me troubles.
Here it became clear that age for age, tannin is the clear marker that separates both. Nebbiolo is extremely firm yet the texture more delicate & tender. A real "iron fist in a silk glove".
3 wines stood out from this tasting with some pretty tasty enjoyment:
Massolino Barolo Parafada 2006
a keeper. lovely floral notes w/ dried cherries & earthy undertone. crisp w/ silk but firm tannin. concentrated but lively. already w/ a long lenght. clearly showing much promise of further delicious development w/ time...excellent
Ceretto Barbaresco Bricco Asili 2005
a seducer. beautiffuly elegant & fresh aromas of roses, raspberries, and plum. lovely nose showing depth & liveliness. crisp w/ silk & firm tannins. but an exciting vibrancy of mid-palate. mouthwatering. long floral & delicate finish. ready but can keep & evolve over a great many years. excellent
Il Macchione Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano Riserva 2007
a strongman. deep w/ notes of plums, black berries and dark cherries. touch of spices. concentrated & crisp. firm velvety tannins. powerful & strong. good length but needs time to mellow. excellent
