Thousand Candles Yarra Valley 2011....

Unusual, engaging, and mesmerizing...

Other than being so pale in color, the most surprising aspect of this wine is how crisp and fresh it feels on the palate. It has this tension and intensity that is difficult to properly describe. It lifts the wine, makes it feel as though it is performing a wonderfully mesmerizing modern dance. At once enchanting yet in a totally unexpected way.

It is an unusual wine. 92% Shiraz, 6% Pinot noir, and 2 % Sauvignon Blanc.

Yes, Sauvignon Blanc in a red wine...

And it probably is that 2% which gives it a very special character.

For sure, it must contribute to lighten the color of a normally deep purple Shiraz. But I think it is on the aromatics that it contributes in the most interesting way. The wine displays red fruits, a touch of black olives & herbs. Very much the cool climate type of aromatics found in Syrah normally. Yet, here, it takes on a wonderfully subtle and elegant eucalyptus character. It feels as though it refreshes the nose in the same way that its crisp acidity refreshes the palate.

At 12.5% it is satisfyingly light yet, there is certainly some weight of fruit. The tannins are delicate very much Pinot-like in character. The acidity gives it tension, energy. There is a latent strenght to this wine. Certainly subtle and underlying but very much present nonetheless. The length is intense and very long. Wonderfully satisfying...

Certainly this is not a wine made with the fruit in mind but a wine made to convey an emotion, a feeling, just like fine art would. This is a wine to appreciate sip by sip. A wine to think about, to talk about with other like-minded people, or simply to enjoy, alone, deep in thoughts...

A wonderful wine...
