Chacra Cincuenta y Cinco Patagonia Pinot Noir 2012... A delightful surprise...

Sometimes, the reasons for my choice of wine can be pretty shallow...or deeply subconcsious...

Here is a wine that I selected solely based on its label.  Its name, Chacra, made me think of the sanskrit word "charkra" which means "center of energy".  As I was also concentrated on buying other wines for later posts (on malbec & again on Torrontés), I did not pay more attention to the label until I pulled the cork 10 minutes ago...  It turns out that this "Chacra", which apparently means "farm" in the local language, was made biodynamically by an Italian, Piero Incisa Della Rocchetta, grandson of the fabled creator of the Italian Icon Sassicaia...

Perhaps my choice was driven by a deep & unknown spiritual reason?

In any case, it is a beauty.  Who would think that a "New World" wine would be so delicate & gentle with a mere 12.9% alcohol?

A delightfully crisp acidity with delicate yet firm tannins and a pale ruby color, all telltale signs of Pinot Noir.  Red fruits dominate w/ lively wild strawberries, raspberries and a touch of violets.  The wine is rather restrained in style, more Burgundy than Central Otago, with a medium body & dense fruit on the mid-palate.  The delicate notes of mint & a certain savouriness of aromas together w/ a lovely succulent suppleness points to whole-cluster fermentation and ageing in oak barrels all very finely integrated.  The intensity  and complexity of its long finish is irresistible for another sip!

This wine certainly have the acidity, the density, and complexity to keep and develop very nicely over the next few years.

Surely, its crispness & ethereal mouthfeel with delicate red fruits leads to a cool climate and Patagonia fits the bill perfectly.  Here is a wine region we need to keep an eye on!

On its website (http://bit.ly/1wmoze5), I discovered that it is made from grapes planted in 1955.  Not bad for a "New World" Country...

Certainly, a glass or two of this wine this evening helps me rest my chakra... The best meditation I could ask for after a full day of deep studies...
