Judging from the type of food served in a 'winstub", or wine cellar, here in Strasbourg, I can only guess that winters are harsh because the food can certainly keep you warm! 

Recommended by the concierge at my hotel which themselves have a wonderful brasserie (Les Haras), I was not disappointed for a typical Alsatian experience...
